Caterham teases entry-level Seven-based roadster

England's Caterham has confirmed that it is working on an entry-level Seven-based roadster to celebrate its 40th anniversary.  Scheduled to debut later this year, the yet-unnamed car will retail for less £17,000, a sum that converts to roughly $25,000.

The brand's current entry-level model, the Classic, carries a base price of £14,495 (roughly $22,000) but it is only sold as a kit and it uses outdated technology.  The upcoming model will be a little more expensive but it will be sold as a complete car and fitted with what McLaren calls a "super-flexible, compact engine" that complies with the strict Euro 6 emissions norms.

Technical details are not known, but Caterham has long favored Ford engines and rumors claim the entry-level model will be powered by a turbocharged 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder mill.

The dark teaser image confirms the car will be instantly recognizable as a Seven in spite of being lighter and smaller than most of Caterham's current models.

“As we celebrate our 40th anniversary at Caterham, it feels good to be taking the brand right back to where it started. Colin Chapman designed the Seven to be entirely "fit-for-purpose" – a racing car for the road with the driving experience at its heart," said CEO Graham McDonald in a interview with England's AutoExpress.
