Skoda Rapid hatchback leaked ahead of Frankfurt debut

Skoda Rapid hatchback leaked ahead of Frankfurt debut

An online configurator erroneously published by Volkswagen's Škoda division has prematurely revealed the Rapid Spaceback ahead of its scheduled debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show that will open its doors next September.  Expected to go on sale in Europe and in China early next year, the long-rumored Spaceback will be billed as a cheaper alternative to the seventh-gen Golf.

The low-resolution screen shots captured by Czech website Autoforum confirm that the Spaceback is nearly identical to the Rapid sedan from the front bumper to the B-pillar.  Past that point, it gains a tall, upright silhouette that is almost reminiscent of the Audi A3 Sportback but it retains the same tail lamps as its sedan counterpart.

Technical specifications were not leaked but the Spaceback will undoubtedly be offered with the same Volkswagen-sourced four-cylinder engines as the regular Rapid.  The gas mills will range from a 75-horsepower 1.2-liter to a 1.4-liter rated at 122 ponies, and a lone turbodiesel that churns out 105 horsepower will round out the lineup.  All models will be front-wheel drive and pack a variety of manual and DSG gearboxes.

Look for official details about the Škoda Rapid Spaceback to emerge in the weeks leading up to the car's debut.
