2016 Dodge Journey to be imported from Detroit?

2016 Dodge Journey to be imported from Detroit?

Chrysler will shift production of its next-generation Dodge Journey crossover from Mexico to the United States, a new report finds.

According to a new report from analysis firm AutomotiveCompass, by way of Automotive News, Chrysler is planning to shift production of its Dodge Journey crossover from its assembly plant in Toluca, Mexico, to the company's Sterling Heights facility just outside of metro Detroit. The switchover is expected to coincide with the Journey's next major update, which is scheduled for 2016.

The Journey will join the Chrysler 200 at the Sterling Heights Assembly plant. The move makes sense for Chrysler as both the next-generation Journey and 200 are slated to ride on the same CUSW platform. Moreover, the Dodge Dart and upcoming Jeep Cherokee, which both ride on the CUSW architecture and use similar parts, are built at nearby plants, which would help reduce transportation costs for Chrysler's suppliers.

Due to trade agreements, which would raise the price of the Journey in South America and Europe, it is unlikely that the U.S.-built crossover will be exported to other world markets. The Dodge Journey is currently sold as the Fiat Freemont outside of the U.S.

It remains to be seen what will become of the Toluca plant after the Journey moves to Detroit. The Mexico plant's only two products are the Journey and the Fiat 500, but Fiat will reportedly shift production of the 500 city car to Poland in 2015, leaving the Toluca without a product beyond 2016.
