VW-owned SEAT unveils experimental plug-in hybrid

Volkswagen's Spain-based SEAT division has lifted the veil off of the experimental Leon Verde plug-in hybrid.  The car is the result of a four-year long research project called Cenit Verde, which translates to Green Zenith.

Nearly identical inside and out to the new third-generation Leon, the plug-in hybrid is powered by a 120-horsepower 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder engine and a 100-horsepower electric motor that gets power from a lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the car's floor.  The Verde can travel on electricity alone for up to 31 miles and it returns 146 mpg in a mixed European cycle when driven conservatively.

The gasoline-electric drivetrain emits just 36 grams of CO2 per kilometer with both power sources running, making SEAT's plug-in hybrid cleaner than even the most efficient non-electric new car on the market today.

The Leon Verde packs an innovative two-way charging system that can send electricity back to the power grid if needed.  It can also charge the car exclusively during low-demand hours, saving the owner money.

Although promising on paper, the Leon Verde is an experimental one-off prototype and it will not be added to the SEAT lineup as a regular-production model in the foreseeable future.
