BMW is increasing the connectivity of its ConnectedDrive infotainment system through the use of a new built-in SIM card.
Set to launch in Europe beginning this July, BMW's new SIM card-equipped ConnectedDrive system will give drivers access to the internet without the need of a smartphone or other mobile device. In order to best utilize the updated system, BMW is also launching a new ConnectedDrive Store, similar to Apple's App Store.
Accessible via a home PC or from within the vehicle, the ConnectedDrive Store is intended to give BMW drivers the freedom to customize their vehicle's infotainment system to fit their needs. Owners can simply pick whatever apps and service they want, eliminating unwanted virtual clutter on their dashboards.
BMW's updated ConnectedDrive system will also enhance vehicle safety. In addition to its infotainment perks, the system features an Intelligent Emergency Call service that can alert authorities to the location and the severity of a crash.
BMW is hoping to have 5 million vehicles linked worldwide to its ConnectedDrive system by 2017, so it probably won't be long until the SIM-based system -- or something similar -- launches in the United States.
