GM recalls 1,600 Chevy, Cadillac cars over brake light issue

GM recalls 1,600 Chevy, Cadillac cars over brake light issue

General Motors is recalling a select number of 2013 and 2014 model year vehicles for brake lights that might have a mind of their own.

GM issued a recall on Wednesday covering Cadillac ATS and XTS vehicles from the 2013 model year, as well as the Chevrolet's all-new 2014 Impala, for a potential brake light issue. The recall covers a total of 1,621 vehicles, nearly equally split between Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles.

GM says the vehicles included in the recall may have a fault that causes the brake lights to illuminate without the driver touching the brake pedal. The defect could also disengage cruise control.

The NHTSA warns that the malfunctioning brake lights could pose a safety hazard for other drivers on the road. However, no injuries or crashes have been linked to the recall.

According to The Detroit News, GM discovered the problem at its Lansing Grand River plant – where the ATS is made – on May 7. GM tracked down the issue to two separate lots of parts.
