Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost repeats as International Engine of the Year

Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost repeats as International Engine of the Year

In a development that constitutes yet another blow to the “no replacement for displacement” theory, Ford’s diminutive 1.0-liter Ecoboost three-cylinder has been named the International Engine of the Year for the second consecutive year.

A panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries handed the 1.0-liter Ecoboost the highest score in the 15-year history of the award.

Originally launched in late 2011 in Europe, the mill utilizes the usual EcoBoost recipe of turbocharging and direct injection to help overcome its modest size and produce up to 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque.

The engine enjoys strong take rates in many of Ford’s smaller European vehicles, and the Blue Oval plans to expand its availability later this year to India and China with the upcoming EcoSport crossover and to the United States with the updated 2014 Fiesta subcompact.

Notable winners in individual categories include Ferrari’s 6.3-liter V12, which earned the Performance Engine award, and Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter TSI ACT four-cylinder, which took home the New Engine prize. Fiat’s 0.875-liter turbocharged two-cylinder CNG received top honors in the Green Engine division.
