GM's Opel previews facelifted Insignia sedan

GM's Opel previews facelifted Insignia sedan

General Motors' Opel division has revealed the facelifted Insignia ahead of its scheduled debut at next September's Frankfurt Motor Show. The midsize Insignia, which forms the basis of the Buick Regal, is built in Germany and offered as a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback and a roomy station wagon.

The Insignia gains redesigned headlights, a larger grille and chrome inserts in the lower bumper, giving it a more elegant look that sets it apart from its main rivals.  The modifications carried out to the back end are limited to new two-piece tail lamps and a revised bumper.

The cockpit features a redesigned instrument cluster and a new center stack with rearranged buttons, but the big news is that the Insignia can be ordered with a touch screen-based infotainment system for the first time.  It combines the car's entertainment, navigation and Bluetooth-based connectivity functions into a single eight-inch touch screen mounted on top of the center stack.  The system can be controlled with knobs on the dashboard, buttons on the steering wheel or the aforementioned touchscreen, and there's also a voice recognition system for making hands-free calls, entering navigation destinations, selecting a song and more.

Insignia buyers can choose between a wide selection of gasoline- and diesel-burning engines ranging from a frugal 120-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel that emits just 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer to a range-topping OPC-badged model that churns out 325 horsepower thanks to a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6.  The lineup boasts both manual and automatic gearboxes as well as front- and all-wheel drive models.

Pricing information will be released closer to the car's on-sale date.

Like all members of the Opel lineup, the Insignia will wear a Vauxhall badge in the United Kingdom.
