Could Chevy be planning a 576hp version of the SS?

Could Chevy be planning a 576hp version of the SS?

An announcement from General Motors' UK Vauxhall division has piqued our interest.

Vauxhall announced on Thursday that a new, 576 horsepower version of its VXR8 GTS is now available for order. Why would this particular Brit be of any interest to us? Because it is essentially a massaged version of the Chevrolet SS that will soon arrive in U.S. showrooms.

Unlike the SS, which uses a 415 horsepower, 415 lb-ft of torque LS3 6.2L V8, however, the VXR8 GTS makes use of the same 6.2L supercharged LSA V8 found under the hood of the Camaro ZL1. That means the VXR8 GTS boasts 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque.

And, as if Vauhall needed to sweeten the pot even further, the VXR8 GTS can be had with an honest-to-goodness six-speed manual. For those less interested in rowing their own gears, the car can also be had with a six-speed auto.

For the record, GM has made no indication whatsoever that it plans to sell a version of the VXR8 GTS in the United States. However, it wouldn't be that far fetched considering the engineering work is done and the LSA engine has already been certified for the U.S. market.

So, will Chevy launch a supercharged version of the SS to rival the Dodge Charger SRT8? Only time will tell.
