Microsoft to power Chrysler's Uconnect?

Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system could be in for some major changes as Microsoft says it is now supplying the Auburn Hills-based automaker with in-vehicle tech for its lower-trim models. Moreover, Microsoft says Chrysler has plans to use its technology in more vehicles in the coming years.

Chrysler currently relies on a company called QNX Software Systems to power its Uconnect infotainment system, which has been lauded by owners and press alike for its easy of use. The switch to Microsoft could be a huge move for Chrysler as it would undoubtedly alter what has proven to be an excellent Uconnect interface.

Fiat currently uses a Microsoft Windows-based system called Uconnect 5.0 in its 500L hatchback in Europe. The system features a touchscreen, the ability to install and run applications and will soon support TomTom navigation.

The Uconnect 5.0-equipped Fiat 500L will land in U.S. showrooms next month. Chrysler confirmed to Automotive News that the Uconnect 5.0 system is already being fitted to some lower-spec 2013 Ram 1500 models in the United States.

Chrysler declined to say if it had plans to use the Microsoft-based system in future models.

Microsoft currently powers several automotive infotainment systems, including Kia's Uvo and Ford's Sync.
