Audi mulling 3-Series GT-fighting A4 Vario?

A new report coming out of Germany indicates that Audi is developing a tall five-door hatchback that will compete against the BMW 3-Series GT that was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Tentatively called A4 Vario, the hatchback will ride on the same platform as the China-only long-wheelbase A4 L.  With room for up to five passengers, it will be billed as more family-oriented than the regular A4 and it will boast considerably more passenger and cargo space.

All next-gen A4s will utilize downsize engines so expect the Vario to come equipped with a host of small-displacement turbocharger gasoline engines that pack state-of-the-art technology such as cylinder deactivation and automatic start/stop.  Several turbocharged diesel-burning four-cylinders will also be on offer.

If the rumor proves true, the A4 Vario will be unveiled at a trade show in 2015 and land in showrooms a year later.   Whether or not it will be sold in the United States is up in the air.

On a quest to fill every conceivable market niche, Audi is also believed to be developing a family-friendly version of the smaller A3 that will take on the Mercedes-Benz B-Class and the upcoming production version of the BMW Concept Active Tourer.
