Audi to build hydrogen-powered A7?

Audi to build hydrogen-powered A7?

Audi recently detailed both its e-tron and g-tron models in a press release. The e-tron models are those powered – at least partially – by electricity in either plug-in electric or full electric form. The g-trons, however, are powered by a synthesized natural gas owned by Audi.

There appears, though, to be another –tron in the works, one powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

So far, most of Audi’s –tron models have been on smaller platforms. The A3 e-tron is a perfect example. For the fuel-cell model, Audi plans to go a bit bigger, at least according to an Autocar report. In an interview with Autocar, Audi's technical chief, Wolfgang Dürheimer, revealed that the German brand is currently working on hydrogen-powered A7 model.

Audi’s last foray into the hydrogen realm was the 2009 Q5 HFC. While it’s not yet known if the A7 hydrogen car will be similarly powered, the Q5 HFC featured dual electric motors, which were supplied powered by the onboard fuel cell.

Since the Department of Energy’s founding of the H2USA hydrogen campaign, more automakers seem to be more willing to produce hydrogen cars. Honda, just last week, announced its joining the H2USA project.

More news is sure surface soon - including specifics and details - of the latest A7 –tron. So check back for more updates.
