Flooding forces Porsche to halt Cayenne, Panamera production

Flooding forces Porsche to halt Cayenne, Panamera production

Rising floodwaters that have cutoff supply lines forced Porsche on Thursday to temporarily suspend production of its popular Cayenne SUV and Panamera sedan.

Porsche closed its Leipzig, Germany, plant – which makes both the Cayenne and Panamera – earlier today following heavy flooding in the Czech Republic that crimped major supply lines.
"We have a bottleneck in the supply of car bodies built in the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, which are transported by train across the Czech Republic to our plant in Leipzig," a Porsche spokeswoman told Automotive News.

The spokeswoman added that finally assembly of the Panamera will also be impacted, even though the sedan's body structure is produced in the German city of Hanover.

Porsche, which typically produces about 450 vehicles per day in Leipzig, said it could offset the production losses with additional shifts in the future.

The production halt could have a major impact on Porsche's sales, even if it only lasts for a day or two. The Cayenne is by far Porsche's best-selling model, with the SUV accounting for about half of the automaker's total sales.
