Ford has published preliminary details concerning the 2014 Fusion’s new 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, which will represent the sixth powerplant available for the Blue Oval’s midsize sedan when it launches this summer.
Set to replace the existing 1.6-liter EcoBoost in automatic transmission-equipped Fusions, the 1.5-liter utilizes a turbocharger and direct-injection to produce 178 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 1,500-4,500 rpm.
Stick-shifted Fusion models will continue to feature the 1.6-liter, which is good for 178 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 184 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm.
Although official fuel economy figures have yet to be released, Ford promises that the new mill will be more efficient than the 1.6-liter, which returns 24/37 city/highway mpg in the 2013 Fusion when equipped with stop-start and a six-speed automatic.
Other benefits of the 1.5-liter include improved throttle response and a new water pump that decouples when cooling isn’t needed, allowing the engine to warm up more quickly in order to decrease cold-start emissions.
Along with the new 1.5-liter and the carry-over 1.6-liter Ecoboost motors, Ford will still offer the Fusion with a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, a hybrid powertrain and a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2014 model year.
