Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive sets Nurburgring record

Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive sets Nurburgring record

Mercedes-Benz' SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive has set a new Nurburgring lap record for a production electric vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz announced on Friday that the battery-powered SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive successfully lapped the Nurburgring's north loop in a record-setting 7:56.234 minutes. The record-setting lap also marked the first time in history that a regular production electric vehicle has broken the eight-minute barrier at the famed track.

"Mercedes-AMG impressively shows the potential of the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive with the new record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer which makes it possible to circle the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically-powered series production vehicle. This record run is another proof for our constant innovative vigor.”

Mercedes-Benz' record-setting run should stand for the foreseeable future as Audi recently canceled plans to put its R8 e-tron electric supercar into production.

Mercedes doesn't have any current plans to sell the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive in the United States, but the zero-emissions supercar will go on sale in Europe this month with a starting price of 416,500 euros ($549,780).

In case you were wondering, the gas-powered version of the SLS AMG is capable of lapping the Nurburgring in 7:40 minutes.

Toyota still holds the overall EV lap record at the Nurburgring, thanks to a 7:22 minute lap time by the automaker's TMG EV P002.
