Porsche resumes Cayenne production

Porsche resumes Cayenne production

Porsche has resumed production of its Cayenne SUV at the company's plant in Leipzig, Germany, following a supply issue related to ongoing flooding in the Czech Republic.

Yesterday Porsche was forced to halt production at its Leipzig plant because flood waters made it impossible for supplies to pass through the Czech Republic. Although still tentative, supply lines have opened up enough to allow some production to resume today.

“We’re starting today with one shift,” Siegfried Buelow, head of the plant, told Bloomberg. “The supply situation however remains critical.”

Central Europe has been hit with heavy rainfall over the last few days, resulting in flooding in parts of Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic. The floods closed many roads and railways, making it impossible for Porsche to ship parts for its Cayenne from Bratislava to Leipzig.

The Leipzig plant, which makes the Panamera sedan in addition to the Cayenne SUV, typically produces about 450 cars per days. Porsche says it will be able to make up for any lost production in the coming weeks.

“Because of our flexible production system, we’re able to make up for the lost vehicles,” the automaker said.

The Cayenne is Porsche's best-selling model.
