NHTSA probing Honda Odyssey over potential air bag fault

NHTSA probing Honda Odyssey over potential air bag fault

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Honda Odyssey minivans from the 2003-04 model years for air bags that might deploy without a crash.

The NHTSA announced this week that it has launched a preliminary investigation covering roughly 320,000 Odyssey vans after receiving six customer complaints of air bags randomly deploying. No crashes have been linked to the potential defect, but the NHTSA says three of the complaints involved injuries.

The Odyssey's potentially faulty air bags could have links to two recent air bag recalls. In 2012 Chrysler recalled 745,000 vehicles after it determined that air bags in its Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee were prone to going off during routine driving. Toyota and General Motors issued a similar recall this year covering 900,000 Toyota Matrix, Toyota Corolla and Pontiac Vibe models.

Those recalls were issued after the NHTSA tracked down an electrical fault back to air bag supplier TRW Automotive. Honda used some of the same TRW air bag components in its 2003-04 Odyssey minivans.

Honda says it is fully cooperating with the NHTSA investigation.

"Honda has been monitoring this issue since responding to a NHTSA information request involving their investigation of another manufacturer last year," Honda said in a statement obtained by Automotive News. "Honda will continue to cooperate with NHTSA through the investigation process, and will continue our own internal review of the available information."

No recall has been issued, but one could be forthcoming.
