New CVT helps 2014 Chevy Spark hit 39 mpg

New CVT helps 2014 Chevy Spark hit 39 mpg

Chevrolet has announced a handful of revisions to its lilliputian Spark hatchback for the 2014 model year, with the most noteworthy being a major automatic transmission upgrade that improves both drivability and fuel economy.

Whereas the 2013 Spark was afflicted with an optional four-speed automatic, the new model benefits from a CVT as the two-pedal transmission choice. Chevrolet promises that the infinite-ratio ‘box hastens acceleration, reduces engine noise at highway speeds, and boosts mileage from 28/37 city/highway mpg up to 30/39 mpg.

Minor tweaks to the five-speed manual-equipped Spark mean that its efficiency ratings have fluctuated slightly. They now stand at 31/39 mpg, compared with 32/38 mpg for last year.

Other changes to the supermini include the addition of standard automatic on/off headlights across the lineup, along with new power-adjustable heated exterior mirrors for the 2LT trim level.

The range of exterior color choices has also been expanded with new Lime and Grape Ice hues.

All Spark models continue to make use of a 1.2-liter four-cylinder that delivers 84 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm.

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark will begin arriving at dealerships this summer.
