After reimbursing the United States Department of Energy (DOE), Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that he is not necessarily against the idea of selling the automaker to a larger group.
However, Musk remained cautious and made it clear that ten-year old Tesla will remain independent until it manages to launch a battery-powered car that is more affordable than the Model S and better-built than the Nissan Leaf. Such a car is what Musk says he has always dreamed of building.
"With the Model S, you have a compelling car that’s too expensive for most people. And you have the Leaf, which is cheap, but it’s not great. What the world really needs is a great, affordable electric car. I’m not going to let anything go, no matter what people offer, until I complete that mission," promised Musk in an interview with The Detroit News.
The yet-unnamed car is at least three or four years away from being unveiled. Musk estimates that it will retail for half the price of a Model S and that it will have a maximum driving range of 200 miles thanks to the use of Tesla's third-generation electric drivetrain.
The cheapest Model S currently on offer runs $62,400 after a $7,500 federal rebate.
