BMW has released a new video highlighting the design details of its Pininfarina-penned Gran Lusso Coupé, which debuted last week at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance.
Representing the first-ever collaboration between the two companies, the Gran Lusso Coupé takes the form of a full-size coupe with elegant, elongated proportions and striking details.
Up front, the slightly blunt nose is adorned with an oversized rendition of BMW’s twin kidney grille – finished in matte-sheen aluminum and high-gloss black trim – and narrowed headlights that accentuate the car’s considerable width.
A gracefully sloping roofline and gently upswept creases originating at the side vents distinguish the flanks, while minimalistic full-length taillights form the center of an indentation that, along with chrome exhaust tips, adds a bit of visual drama to the relatively simple rear end.
In terms of overall design, the cabin is similar to that of the 7-series sedan, but it’s distinguished by unique touches like New Zealand-sourced kauri wood that BMW claims is over 48,000 years old.
Precise technical details are not available, but BMW says the Gran Lusso Coupé is powered by a V12 engine. It is likely the same 544-horsepower 6.0-liter unit that is found under the hood of the 7-Series.
BMW has unveiled a new concept car at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance every year since 2008. The cars have never been given the green light for production – and BMW bills the Gran Lusso Coupé as a one-off - but the concept could hint at a future flagship coupe (perhaps under a revived 8-Series badge) aimed squarely at the successor to the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class.
