Ford has officially begun production of it Focus Electric in Europe. The Focus Electric is the first full-electric vehicle to be built by Ford in Europe.
Production of the Ford Focus Electric commenced earlier on Wednesday at the automaker's factory in Saarlouis, Germany. The Focus Electric had been exclusively made at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.
“Focus Electric marks the dawn of an exciting new age of full-electric Ford passenger vehicles in Europe, and demonstrates the success of the One Ford strategy in making this sophisticated vehicle available to our European customers,” said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “It’s a car that addresses the mobility demands and environmental concerns of today’s car buyers in the most direct way possible – combining performance and advanced technology with a zero-emission powertrain.”
The Ford Focus Electric will hit European showrooms in August.
Ford spent more than $21 million to ready the Saarlouis plant for Focus Electric production, but it remains to be seen if that investment will pan out. Demand for the Focus Electric has been underwhelming in the United States, where Ford sold just 685 of the 1,627 Focus Electrics it built last year. As a result of that soft demand, Ford has already slashed $2,000 off the Focus Electric's base price.
