2014 Ford Fiesta SFE rated at 41 mpg highway

2014 Ford Fiesta SFE rated at 41 mpg highway

The EPA has released official mileage ratings for the 2014 Ford Fiesta Super Fuel Economy (SFE), which will represent the most efficient member of the recently-facelifted Fiesta lineup until a new 1.0-liter EcoBoost model launches later this year.

While the 2013 Fiesta SFE returned 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, updated powertrain programming and revised aero components help the 2014 edition improve by one mpg in both cycles to 30/41 mpg.

In comparison, the normal 2014 Fiesta is rated at 27/38 mpg with a standard five-speed manual and 29/39 mpg with an optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The SFE package, available on Fiesta SE sedan and hatchback models, adds a bevy of wind-cheating bits, including a rear spoiler, side air deflectors, underbody shields, lower grille blockers and low-rolling resistance tires. It is offered only with the dual-clutch gearbox.

The package doesn’t make any changes to the Fiesta’s 120-horsepower, 112 lb-ft of torque 1.6-liter four-cylinder.

Those interested in an even more miserly Fiesta should wait for the upcoming 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder, which will also provide an extra dose of output with 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of twist.

Ford promised at the 2014 Fiesta’s debut last November that the Fiesta EcoBoost will be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car in the United States. However, since that time several other impressively thrifty rides – like the 40-mpg combined Mitsubishi Mirage – have arrived on the scene, meaning either that Ford will have to qualify its claim or that the automaker’s new subcompact will be one serious mpg machine.
