The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that it has launched a full-scale investigation into reports of faulty tail lamps on 551,511 examples of the 2005 and 2006 Pontiac G6 sedan.
Warranty claims released by General Motors to NHTSA show that more than 1,100 reports of brake lights illuminating when the brake pedal is not depressed. In addition, 314 G6 owners complained directly to NHTSA and one owner reported that a crash was caused because of the malfunctioning brake lights.
This latest investigation follows up on a 2009 recall of about 8,000 2005 and 2006 G6s to correct a similar brake light problem.
If NHTSA sees a need for a full recall, it will advise GM to call back affected G6s. NHTSA recalls are not mandatory, as evidenced by Jeep's recent refusal to recall vehicles after NHTSA recommended remedies to their fuel tanks.
The G6, Pontiac's best-seller in the final years of the GM brand's life, was closely related to the Chevrolet Malibu and Saturn Aura. Those models are not listed in NHTSA's investigation, although they were the subject of a 2008 technical service bulletin to rectify an issue with their brake shift interlock systems. At the time, GM had its dealers grease the cars' body control module connectors, which suffered from terminal corrosion.
