Stalling issue prompts Chrysler to recall 14,800 Dodge Darts

Chrysler has announced plans to recall 14,800 Dodge Dart sedans worldwide to address a cold-weather stalling problem.

The automaker discovered the issue during internal testing, when a Dart parked for eight hours in a 20-degree climate chamber stalled shortly after startup. Further investigation revealed that similar complaints have been lodged with dealers.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix – dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module to remedy the issue. Chrysler says there are no known crashes or injuries linked to the stalling phenomenon.

The recall covers 2013 model year Darts equipped with the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and dual-clutch automatic transmission. About 12,900 of the affected Darts are in the U.S., with the majority of the remainder located in Canada.

The campaign is the latest in a string of six Chrysler recalls affecting over 1.1 million vehicles that have taken place during the course of the past month.

Chrysler raised eyebrows recently by refusing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s request to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty models that the agency alleges are prone to fires following rear-end collisions.

For its part, Chrysler claims the indicted Jeeps are not more dangerous than other comparable SUVs, and that they “met and exceeded all applicable requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”
