BMW won't use Apple's latest iOS in the Car technology

BMW says it has no current plans to integrate Apple's latest iOS in the Car into its vehicles, citing an unwillingness to ditch its own infotainment system or alter its dashboard designs.

"The upshot is that as we have such an advanced multimedia offer that has been in vehicles in various guises for more than a decade, it would not be that straight forward to start changing all of the architecture of a car as has been implied [by Apple]," a BMW spokesperson told MacNN, a sister site to Leftlane News.

The spokesperson added that changing a dashboard design to work with iOS in the Car is "not as simple as it sounds."

A handful of automakers – including Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Infiniti, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Acura and Jaguar – have announced plans to use iOS in the Car in their vehicles starting with the 2014 model year, but BMW says it will be a while before the technology moves into the mainstream because automakers must plan out their vehicles years in advance.

In the meantime, BMW will rely on its iDrive and ConnectedDrive systems. BMW has, however, announced that its 2014 model year vehicles will support Apple's Siri Eyes Free hands free technology.
