Nissan preparing re-badged Dacia SUV

Nissan preparing re-badged Dacia SUV

Putting an end to months of rumors, Nissan has confirmed that it is in the final stages of developing a new SUV for emerging markets.  Christened Terrano, a name introduced over two decades ago on the European version of the first-gen Pathfinder, the off-roader will borrow its chassis and most of its sheet metal from the popular Dacia Duster.

A computer-generated sketch published by Nissan shows the Terrano stands out from the Duster thanks to angular headlights, a specific bumper and a chromed grille that is similar to the one found on many of the firm's recent SUVs and crossovers.  Around back, the Terrano gains larger tail lamps and a more stylized hatch.

The Terrano's interior will be better finished than the Duster's in order to justify its slightly higher base price.  Pictures are not available but expect up-market variants to pack imitation brushed aluminum trim and a touch screen-based infotainment system.

Mechanically, the Terrano will be available with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder dCi turbodiesel that is found under the hood of many Renault, Dacia and even Mercedes-Benz products.  A 1.6-liter gas-burning four-banger will be offered in select countries, and both front- and four-wheel drive variants will be available.

Look for the Nissan Terrano to break cover before the end of the year.  The SUV will be sold exclusively in emerging markets and Nissan does not plan on exporting it to Europe or to the United States.
