GM China sets May sales record


General Motors' Chinese division has shattered yet another monthly sales record. The Detroit based automaker announced on Wednesday that GM China sold 252,942 vehicles in May, setting a new sales record for the month.

General Motors and its joint ventures sold a record-setting 252,942 vehicles in China last month, marking a 9.4 percent improvement over May 2012.

Buick remained an important part of GM China's portfolio in May, with sales increasing 22.7 percent to 63,007 units. Buick's Excelle family of vehicles – including the Excelle XT and GT – led the way for the brand in May, recording more than 40,000 sales.

GM's Chevrolet brand also posted a solid month, with the bow tie division's China sales increasing 4.1 percent to 50,531 units in May. The Cruze was the most popular Chevrolet during the month – racking up 18,229 sales – followed by the Sail small car with 16,328 deliveries.

Cadillac remains a niche player in the China market, but the luxury division saw its sales increase 74.3 percent to 3,843 units in May. The SRX crossover was the most popular Cadillac of the month, recording 2,221 sales.

Through the first five months of the year GM has sold 1,331,185 vehicles in China, an increase of 10.6 percent over the same period a year earlier.
